fun at Panera

Lewis turned 11 months-old on Monday! He woke up from his morning nap and had visitors. Grandma and Grandpa Reitmeyer came to visit and took us all to Panera Bread for lunch. It was fantastic. Lewis had a good time eating puffs and throwing his ring of keys on the floor. It became a fun game to see how many times Grandpa would pick them up for him. We all lost count. :) Lewis sure loves waking up to find some visitors waiting to see him.

He is enjoying standing these days. There are lots of times when he absolutely refuses to sit down. He is enjoying his walking toy more too. The last week or so he has started playing a lot with two toys: a ring stacking toy and a shape sorting toy. The shape sorting toy has an optional lid that he is not using (where he has to put the triangle through the triangle shaped hole etc.), but he loves putting all the shapes into the container with the lid off. He does really well stacking the rings too, and gets really proud of himself when he gets them all done.

He tried meat this week for the first time as well. We got him some of those chicken meat sticks. He likes mashing them in his hands so we have mashed them into some veggies to get more of them down. He seems to like the flavor pretty well. He's working on his second tooth so his mood is all over the place, but he remains a pretty contented boy most of the time.

Lewis's "girl"friend, Corrie, is turning one in a few days. He's pretty excited about it, especially since they've been working on a dance routine to commemorate the day. He won't move like this for us--that's for sure!! SEE THE DANCIN'.

losers!

Do you ever feel like a loser? This week, more than most, the Shepherds have been feeling rather humble and loser-esque. Our candidates all lost in Tuesday's primary. Our team, the Cincinnati Reds, have fallen to the deep pit of last place in their division--and probably all of baseball, for that matter. Justin has some of his own examples that I will not go into out of respect for him and his ventures! It just feels sometimes like we hit a losing streak in our lives and for a while everything goes south.

Lewis remains our sole success. While he is slow in some areas of development, he is lots of fun and we can see his progress weekly (if not daily).

We all go through tough times, and they tend to make us grateful for sucess when it comes. We definitely have hope for tomorrow. This is not the worst time we've ever had, and we always get through whatever comes our way. We're not looking for pity, just sharing the burden. These are light and momentary troubles that are sure to bring about lasting character development, and good stories for the grandkids someday.

primary reminder

Just a friendly reminder that Kentucky's primary for statewide office is tomorrow, May 22nd. The Shepherd fam tries to steer clear of political discussion, but we are officially endorsing Jody Richards in the Democratic primary for governor and Anne Northup in the Republican race. Get out and vote!

physical therapy

We are back to normal and feeling more like the fantastic family we are meant to be! We have a new appreciation for all the food groups and being able to drink coffee etc. To celebrate, we had some visitors over the weekend. Grandma and Grandpa Shepherd came on Saturday with a special treat for Lewis that should help him learn to walk. It is a Little Tike's Activity Walker with parental speed control. On the slowest setting, Lewis can hold on and take steps at his ultra-slow pace. He loves standing, so we know he'll get a lot of use out of this thing.



Then Aunt Ellen came to visit on Saturday night and stayed until Sunday afternoon. Lewis always has a good time with her too. She helped him maneuver on his new toy. Watch this video to see some of the action:

yucky update

Well, Lewis is almost fully recovered! Unfortunately, I got the bug too, and got to really empathize with how our boy was feeling. Justin, so far is doing okay. We're hoping it bypasses him somehow. Lewis has maintained a diet of bananas and rice cereal. Tomorrow we'll probably try sweet potatoes and go from there. I've been eating pancakes and pasta mainly, and would really love to venture back out into the realm of meat and veggies. :)

Thanks for your prayers! After a lot of cleaning and sterilizing we should be social again in the near future.

feeling yucky

WARNING: This post contains info that you may not want to know!

Yesterday morning Lewis woke up and everything seemed fine! Halfway through his first feeding he started vomiting and it was enough to thoroughly soak our clothes and a nearby pillow. He seemed really happy afterward so he finished his feeding and started the day as usual. We had some errands to run and got out for a couple of hours. He ate again on schedule, but missed his solids because we were out. He went down for his nap at 11 a.m. He slept all the way until 2 p.m. and got up in time for the next feeding. However, as soon as I pulled him upright out of his crib, the spewing started again! He did not seem interested in eating then, though he did eat more later in the day, and even had some bananas.

The evening went a little better, but he woke up vomiting in the night and again this morning, first thing. The nurse at our pediatrician's office said that it is probably just a stomach virus and it will have to run its course. There has also been some action out the other end as well, so we're having all kinds of fun over here! Some of it could be related to teething (that's our assumption when anything weird happens), because Lewis seems soooo happy as long as he's not vomiting, and he is chewing his gums all the time. Still, we will be happy when he is back to normal. Your prayers and/or advice are appreciated!

We finished off the weekend with a Foxhole show at the End. Special thanks to Guy Kelly for filling in for Derek Holt and playing some bass. Lewis spent time with Imogene and cousin Olivia instead. We got some photos and a short video.

weekend away

Here's a photo essay of our weekend in Nashville. First, before we left, Justin gave me my mother's day gift from him, our parents, sisters and of course, Lewis. It is a really great digital camera! It's pink with a pink case too, for that feminine touch. Thanks to all who pitched in for this fabulous gift. :) This was the first picture taken with the camera.





















On Saturday, while Justin practiced with the band, Lewis and I got to spend some time with my former roommate, Karen Grigsby. We walked around Centennial Park and Lewis got to see some real ducks! He didn't seem particularly interested, but we had a good time.

Thankfully, Justin's Aunt Imogene was kind enough to let us stay with her! Here's Lewis enjoying some peas on Sunday before church. Eating on the road can be a bit of a challenge!

We went to Cheekwood after that. For anyone not familiar with Cheekwood, it is a private park with some fantastic botanical gardens, a museum and some art exhibits. On the way there I got some pictures of Lewis and his tooth.

teeth, yogurt and fun

In the last few days, Lewis has been very busy! Most recently his tooth has definitely emerged, though it is still not fully visible. He also tried yogurt for the first time, and it was homemade!! Call me crazy, but I really enjoyed learning to make yogurt and it's much cheaper than buying it. It is time consuming however. Socially, over the weekend he got to bond more with our cat, Macchi (short for macchiato, a yummy latte beverage). He loves her so much! We are glad she is taking some interest in him too.















On Sunday, he got to spend some time with Simon Basham. Simon is 6 months younger, but it won't be long until he catches up to Lewis in size and ability. They seemed to mutually enjoy and yet confuse each other by the other's company. They often seemed to be thinking, "Who is that little person?" We stole this picture from them, by the way.
















Last night we went to El Mazatlan for an "Ocho De Mayo" social with our small group (we missed Cinco de mayo on Saturday, oops!). Lewis got dressed for the occasion in his tropical garb. The waiters and waitresses paid him a lot of attention there. We wondered if that is not part of their training, or maybe just the Mexican way?

Yesterday afternoon, Lewis had the opportunity to meet long-time friend of daddy, Nathan McBroom and his lovely fiancee, Abigail King. Nathan has been overseas for the last couple of years so Lewis had to be patient until his return, though he's heard a lot of stories! Nathan and Abigail are getting married in June, and we couldn't be happier for both of them.

Tooth update: Lewis has one tooth coming through finally! It is on the bottom and pretty sharp, but you have to really look to see it.

Food update: Lewis has added spinach to his diet. The first time he was not too excited, but scarfed it down mixed with some bananas. Today he ate it plain!

Movie recommendation: I got to see The Pursuit of Happyness last night (thank you, Priscilla!) and it was by far the best movie I have seen in a very long time. It is clean and uplifting and made me very grateful for what we have, especially in our boy, Lewis. Please see this movie!! You will be glad you did.

hair cut

Lewis had his first hair cut on Monday night! We did it here at home. Justin distracted Lewis with oatmeal, while I trimmed around his ears, in the front and back. I took off an inch in some places! He looks very grown up now. Check out these pictures of us taking a break yesterday. You may not be able to tell much difference.

surprise!

We had a surprise birthday party for Justin's mom on Sunday. It was really instigated by his dad, but we got to play hosts since visiting Lewis is always easy bait. She seemed genuinely surprised and we all had a good time. We forgot to take a lot of pictures, but we have a few, which all happen to include Olivia Clair!

Lewis got to see all of his grandparents this week. First he got to celebrate Grandma Shepherd's birthday on Wednesday. We went up to see her and meet several friends and co-workers. One even gave Lewis a ball that he really enjoyed (see photo). He spent the afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa riding around in his red wagon. He seems to really like it and has plenty of room to grow or bring some friends along for the ride.

On Thursday the Reitmeyers came to visit before leaving for a 2-week trip to Israel. We wish them safety and lots of fun seeing all those incredible Biblical sites!

Happy Birthday Grandma!

There is not tons of breaking news in the Shepherd fam this week. However, there a couple of pictures to share. The first is of Lewis, ready for a Hawaiian luau thanks to his Aunt Monica. The second shows Lewis just after eating his first graham cracker. He's had several of them this week and seems to like them, but can't quite get all of the cracker in his mouth. Whoever invented bibs, especially the plastic ones, was a brilliant person. Mealtimes are sure to get messier as Lewis takes further interest in his spoon. He grabs it at almost every meal now for at least a couple of bites. He gets sooo excited when he puts it in his own mouth.

Lewis is exploring various sounds right now, such as "guh" and "buh." Mama may come out as "bubba" for a while, which is kind of scary in the south, but we always have hope for progress in the vocabulary arena! "Dad" has turned into "God" for the time being, which is rather interesting. :)

Physically, he loves standing, but only seems to figure out how to pull up on people. We put him in front of furniture and he just doesn't get that he can use that to pull himself up. He's weighing in at over 21 lbs. now on our home scale. Big boy!

into sports?

Yeah, this is random information, but the Shepherds have gotten excited about sports this spring. It's not that we are good athletes or anything, but we have been enjoying tennis and baseball nonetheless. Tennis, we got into thanks to Ted and Priscilla Baker, who recently moved back to Bowling Green after a hiatus to Fort Collins, CO for a few years. The Bakers are much more skilled in this area, and I, Shelley, am just plain bad at this point, but it's a lot of fun! Justin bought me a new pink racket and Lewis likes being outside enough that we are able to get to the park and play some. The tennis courts are located very near to the new skate park in town. We get to see some really cool stunts on our way to play tennis for an added bonus.

We are only spectators in the realm of baseball. Thanks to Fox Sports Ohio, we get almost all of the Cincinnati Reds' games on cable, which is a treat after not seeing much at all for several years. After "managing" my high school team (scorekeeping etc.) I became quite the baseball expert and grew to the love the sport. Justin has never really liked the game, but is getting into it. The Reds are playing pretty well so far this season, and Justin is always interested to see how they're doing every night. It's slow-paced and laid back which fits our lifestyle pretty well right now.

I am appreciating the slower pace of our lives these days with a baby in Bowling Green, KY. Today I was able to pay the registration fee on Justin's car and stop by the library, all while strolling Lewis in the cool spring air. It's so nice to live right in the heart of downtown. This is a peaceful place for us to be, and I have to say we are grateful for all the blessings we have.

Yesterday, Justin's aunt and cousins came to visit and play with Lewis. Lewis was just waking up from a long nap when they arrived which was great timing! He had a lot of fun re-connecting with them and we had a lot of fun watching. Justin's Aunt Imogene is also our "accountant" and brought us our tax return, just in time for the tax deadline!! We owe her a debt of gratitude for helping sort through our personal taxes now that we are small business owners. Thanks, Imo, for all your hard work. We are so grateful!

a different Easter

Well, Easter was a little bit different this year! Lewis enjoyed the plastic eggs, stuffed animals and other gifts he got from relatives. We spent time with our family, and Justin and I even got out for a quiet dinner away on Easter evening. We went to Rocky's Italian Grill right on the Indiana side of the Ohio River with a nice view of Louisville. It was really lovely, but cold! We took a photo to commemorate the day.

As far as Lewis goes...........he is still toothless, immobile and content to play and be fed. The only new news is that he seems to be allergic to lima beans. We tried black-eyed peas today and so far, no rash. We'll keep you posted!! He's sure to bust out with new abilities at any moment.

HAPPY EASTER!!

swinging

Lewis had some fun swinging at his friend's house the other day, so we took him to the park to try out those swings. He really likes it! We took a short video to share. Please excuse my constant repetition. Apparently, I ask Lewis the same questions over and over. I'm sure it's a great teaching technique, but it is probably a little obnoxious for grown-ups.
